The Bathroom

The Bathroom- 1950's treasure?

This bathroom hadn't been touched since the 1950's. The light fixture over the sink, "don't touch it- it will shock you" I never tested it, but I believed!

The houses electrical system still operated with knob and tube wiring- We had that replaced prior to closing on the property along with a new roof to stop the water leaks.

Watch for the way we repurposed this old vanity cabinet- We really did try to use everything we could in one way or another.

The closet where the shelves are was a disaster to say the least. Water had leaked in and it smelled, well, not pleasant at all.

Notice the old gas wall heater in the first picture. I remember those from my grandmothers house. Her cat Tiger would get to close warming his bum and would catch his tall on fire and run like crazy yelling all the way. I guess it is no surprise that we could not keep it, they are illegal now- honestly, I was a little sad about that- they sure make for a toasty bathroom.

The old medicine cabinet- covered in 1950's wallpaper.

I couldn't wait to start digging in with Demo just to see what we might find.

I am currently working on a, well, mini bathroom update. I am stripping the paint off all the hardware and will be putting up wallpaper on the upper walls.

Tease: the knob on the medicine cabinet was painted- the paint has been removed. IT IS GLASS : )

BEFORE

Treasure Hunting Demo time

My two daughters and I took on the demo of the walls in the bathroom on a chilly Saturday. We couldn't wait to dig in but it was dusty, and really rather gross. We wanted to strip away the 1950's and see if there where any traces of 1914 underneath.

DEMO

Behind the faux tile panels on the walls we found, yes, original wallpaper! You know it is original when you see cheesecloth! It is what they used back in the day when putting up wallpaper. It was a bit worn and weathered but so cool to find.

Can you say SHIPLAP, this little house is SOLID every interior wall is shiplap on both sides. Unfortunately most was damaged one way or another either with holes, very old termite damage or water damage. So sadly we didn't keep any of it exposed ( well, one unique spot in this bathroom you will see in the finished photos)

I am not sure what is more fun, tearing out the old, or putting the pretty back in! I will say, it sure is wonderful when your vision starts to take shape.

We found many things out during this demo. We learned that part (nearly half) of this bathroom was added on.

During the wall demo we located where the old medicine cabinet use to be over a pedestal sink on the other side of the bathroom next to the linen cabinet. We knew this from the whole cut in the wall where the cabinet was recessed and the signs of the old water pipes in the floor. I am so grateful this adorable medicine cabinet was saved!

This isn't the biggest bathroom, even now, but wow was it little before!

The Vanity gets a new life

This vanity turned out perfect for our back porch TV stand!

I used the old hardware from the kitchen cabinets, just a little fancier than the chrome ones it had.

I had left over "Moody Blue" paint from the front porch, it worked out perfectly.

I used a 2x12x10 board cut in half and stained for the top.

I love the way it turned out, and storage too!
